The University of Gothenburg meets society's challenges with versatile knowledge. With 58,000 students and 6,800 employees, the university is a large and inspiring workplace. Strong research and attractive education attract researchers and students from all over the world. With new knowledge and new perspectives, the University of Gothenburg contributes to a better future.
Extensive research and teaching are conducted at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology at the Sahlgrenska Academy across broad knowledge areas – from molecule to human. The department consists of five sections; pharmacology, physiology, health and rehabilitation, clinical neuroscience, and psychiatry and neurochemistry.
The Department of Neuroscience and Physiology is now seeking a researcher, placed at the Section of Physiology, for a permanent position within a research group focusing on the cell biology of the Islets of Langerhans and diabetes.
Job Description
The position involves independent research in the field of islet cell biology and diabetes, with a special focus on cellular and functional interactions within pancreatic islets.
The position includes responsibility for developing and leading own research projects, with the aim of establishing and further developing an independent research line and contributing to the building of a research group within the department.
The duties include:
- Development, optimization, and maintenance of experimental mouse models for diabetes research, including transgenic models.
- Phenotypic and functional characterization of animal models using advanced molecular, imaging, and physiological methods.
- Responsibility for accurate and structured documentation of animal colonies and experimental procedures in accordance with current ethical and regulatory requirements.
- Design and implementation of hypothesis-driven studies targeting central knowledge gaps in islet cell biology, particularly regarding intercellular signaling and endocrine regulation.
- Analysis, interpretation, and documentation of experimental data.
- Authoring scientific articles and publishing research results in scientific journals, with an expected role as a senior author.
- Mentoring and support for undergraduate and graduate students within the research environment.
- Preparation of ethical applications for animal experiments and ensuring that work is conducted in accordance with ethical guidelines.
- Participation in the preparation of research grant applications to external funders.
The position also includes active participation in the department's scientific environment, including collaboration within national and international research networks.
Qualifications
Requirements:
- PhD in medical science or another field relevant to the position.
- At least five (5) years of postdoctoral experience after PhD.
- Documented experience working with experimental mouse models in diabetes research, including development and functional characterization of models.
- Completed and approved education in scientific work with experimental animals in accordance with current regulations.
- Extensive experience with experimental methods relevant to diabetes research, including hormone secretion analyses, radioimmunoassays, and related physiological measurements.
- Documented experience in experimental work with islet cell hormones, particularly somatostatin, including study design, data collection, and analysis.
- Extensive and well-documented experience working with human biological material, particularly pancreatic islets and plasma, including experimental design and functional analyses.
- Documented ability to independently plan, design, and conduct hypothesis-driven research projects.
- Documented ability to obtain external competitive research funding.
- Very good ability to express oneself orally and in writing in both English and Swedish, as well as the ability to teach and mentor in both languages.
Merits:
- Experience working with optogenetic mouse models, particularly in pancreas research.
- Experience with advanced imaging techniques and analysis methods relevant to islet cell biology.
- Proven ability to lead and develop independent research projects or establish new research lines.
- Documented ability to initiate and maintain research collaborations, both nationally and internationally.
- Experience in interdisciplinary research environments combining physiology, molecular biology, and translational research.
- Good organizational skills, including experience managing complex experimental workflows and maintaining structured documentation.
- Strong publication record in relevant research areas such as islet cell biology, endocrinology, or diabetes research.
- Scientific independence combined with good collaboration skills.
- Experience mentoring undergraduate and graduate students.
Great importance will be attached to personal suitability.
Employment
The position is a permanent, full-time (100%) appointment, with a permanent placement at the Department of Neuroscience and Physiology. Start date: by agreement. Probationary period may apply.
